The Director of Therapy Physics provides clinical and technical leadership to the Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicist, Medical Dosimetrists and Radiation Therapists. Responsible for compliance with all regulating and certifying agencies, training of staff and supervision of source ordering, handling, waste removal and disposal for radiation oncology, quality assurance, policies and procedures in all issues relative to medical physics in the department of Radiation Oncology.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides budgetary input regarding medical physics.
Monitors assgined Therapy Clients satisfaction and provides quarterly updates to Vice Presdient / GM - Therapy Physics
Ensures Therapy Physics personnel are receiving proper guidance for professional growth and development
Generates a plan of care for the treatment of cancer patients on an individual basis, using a medical computer, based on established procedures and state and federal standards/guidelines.
Responsible for the calibration and standardization of highly technical medical imaging and therapy equipment and documentation of the results.
Maintains and assures compliance with the association’s Nuclear Regulatory Commission license.
Responsible for the safety and accuracy of the physical methods used, in cooperation with the physicians and other personnel. Assists in determining performance specifications, evaluations, acceptance testing, and quality assurance of new technical equipment.
Tests for performance characteristics and operational safety as well as radiation safety.
Assists nuclear medicine in room set up, room tear down and room survey of thyroid obliteration patients.
Serves as a clinical resource for the radiation therapy technicians, technologists, and other personnel as needed. Provides education and training in medical physics for physicians, nurses, medical technical assistants, and technical staff.
Responsible for the radiation safety of patients, personnel, and the public in accordance with the Association's commitment to federal (ALARA) standards. May act as Radiation Safety Officer.
Initiates a Quality Assurance program for Radiation Oncology to meet JCAHO and NRC standards.
Initiates a Brachytherapy program for the use of internal radioactive sources for the treatment of cancer. Responsible for the security of all radioactive sources.
Advises the Radiation Safety Committee and provides documentation of such meetings.
Responsible for the testing and calibration of equipment at outlying clinics and hospitals, as necessary.
Responsible for staying abreast of research and development of new techniques, physical methods, and equipment.
Education: Must possess the level of education normally obtained through the completion of a Master's degree in Medical Radiation Physics, with three to 5 years of experience in the radiation oncology, or its equivalent. Must be ABR or ABMP certified or eligible for the above mentioned certification. Experience: A high level of analytical ability is required to analyze and interpret complex information regarding patient treatment with ionizing radiation and in the diagnosing and resolution of problems involving sophisticated equipment. Interpersonal: Must possess interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with staff, physicians, department managers, technologists, and patients
