Position Overview:

Job Summary:

An assistant professor is a regular ranked faculty member in an academic department who is responsible for guiding the learning of students in classrooms and/or clinical settings. A faculty member is assigned to develop and teach the courses for which they are qualified by education, certification, and professional experience. Instructional duties include planning courses and curricula, didactic and clinical teaching, and evaluating courses. Related duties include academic advising of students, supervision of independent study/capstone projects, maintaining weekly office hours, attending meetings, serving on committees, and participation in special events and ceremonies of the Department and University.

Duties and Responsibilities:

50% - Teaching/Learning

• *Develops instructional materials and student learning activities for assigned courses based on program learning outcomes and course learning objectives and within the context of the program’s philosophy and curriculum.

• *Collaborates with other faculty to coordinate teaching to provide optimal learning environment for students.

• *Selects and uses a variety of situationally appropriate teaching methods and

strategies, including but not limited to: lecture, discussion, role playing, group

activities, audiovisual and technical materials.

• *Communicates effectively with students and peers in teaching course and clinical

material and in the achievement of identified learning goals.

• *Conducts assessment of student learning as required by the course learning objectives using the most appropriate methods for those objectives and the nature of the course, including written exams, papers, presentations, practical exams, and projects.

• *Provides regular and timely verbal and written feedback to students, including the return of graded written assignments and documentation of students learning deficiencies.

• *Completes formative and summative evaluation reports on student achievement

of learning objectives and submits final grades according to University policy

• *Continuously assesses courses and instructional performance to improve student learning outcomes.

5% - Academic Advising

• *Is available during regularly posted office hours and by appointment to provide

academic advising to students outside of regularly scheduled course hours.

• *Serves as an advisor to assigned students, including regularly scheduled advisement, to guide students in their professional development, remediate deficiencies in academic and professional behavior, and on other academic matters.

25% - Scholarship/Research

• *Maintains currency of knowledge in subject area.

• *Serves as a capstone/case report advisor for student case report research projects as assigned.

• Achieves an ongoing record of peer-reviewed, disseminated scholarly work in the core area of research interest and other areas as desired.

• May obtain grant funding for scholarly interests as indicated by area of research.

20% - Service

• Provides service to the University, Faculty Organization, and Department as agreed upon with the Department Chair, including attending meetings and serving on Committees.

• Provides professional service to the community through the professional association or other professional organizations.

• May provide clinical service through arrangements with clinics in the community.

• Actively participates in course and curriculum development and accreditation

activities.

• Attends Department and University ceremonies and events.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Supervises and evaluates students in the classroom and/or clinical setting.

• May supervise teaching assistants.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

  • A minimum of a post-professional doctoral degree in the discipline or a closely related field

  • Prior teaching experience in higher education in the discipline or closely related field is strongly preferred.

  • Clinical expertise in the clinical specialty area of teaching assignment.

  • Experience with curriculum development and professional program accreditation preferred.

  • Record of publication and service appropriate for appointment at this rank (see Faculty/Staff Handbook). *Maintains licensure/certification required for the teaching assignment.

Skills and Abilities :

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).

  • Excellent interpersonal relationships.

  • Calculates exam scores and grades.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Current licensure to practice in one’s professional field in California is required.Other specialized certification or license may be required depending on the nature of the instructional assignment.
