SC Department of Public Safety Food Service Specialist I in Statewide, South Carolina

Under general supervision, performs duties in food services such as preparation, serving of meals and delivering meals inside the evaluation center; assists with security, work habits, and behavior of juveniles and SCDC inmates. Cleans assigned area of food services to meet guidelines and standards set by the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). Assists in the preparation and serving of all meals by following recipes; weighs and measures ingredients to ensure that required amounts of food are prepared. Serves portions of food that meet the nutritional requirements of the National School Food Service Program. After each meal, cleans assigned section in the food service area to meet guidelines and standards set by DHEC; specifically: machinery, serving equipment and utensils, pot and pan sink, dishes and dish washing machine, floors, coolers and freezers. Operates the following equipment mixer, can opener, meat slicer, dish washing machine, and oven. Work in the presence and guide the work of adult inmates. Will follow all policy and procedures that guides specific work and general state guidelines that are required of all state employees.

Minimum and Additional Requirements:

There are no minimum training and experience requirements for this class.

Preferred Qualifications:

Requires considerable knowledge of food preparation; considerable knowledge of methods, materials and appliances used in food preparation and service; working knowledge of sanitation and safety procedures pertaining to food preparation and service; ability to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to work weekends/holidays; able to work first and second shifts. Will have exposure to hazardous equipment, extreme heat and freezing temperatures, ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as necessary. Must be able to work in an environment with incarcerated juveniles. Will require standing, bending, squatting, reaching, twisting, running, pushing and pulling. This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of juveniles within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with juveniles within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training is applicable to these duties will be provided.
